His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan was unanimously elected as President of the United Arab Emirates on November 3, 2004, upon the death of his father Sheikh Zayed Sultan Al Nahyan, who held the past from the foundation of the Federation on December 2, 1971 until his death on November 2, 2004. His confirmation as the new leader signalled to the people of the UAE and to the world that a new era has arrived which will evidently be an era of empowerment for the UAE as it continues to strive for excellence and distinction on a regional and global stage.
